Founded in the city of Ulschar, the Magpies are a fairly new, relatively unknown group of individuals for hire, similar to mercenaries but for more than just warfare and combat, the Magpies are a venture in resisting the status quo that has permeated the majority of civilization across Prymec. The group portrays itself as one that is solely focused on the acquisition of money and anything that glitters, hence their name, but the truth is a fair bit more complicated as the public perception of the unit is just a front. 

The roster of the unit is almost entirely composed of women, but a few select men of a special caliber have also joined the ranks. Each of these members are insanely devoted to their role within the unit, and to their fellow Magpies, to the point it feels religious or even magically influenced. In truth, it is. Nuet, the founder of the unit, discovered an alien or ancient artifact that has since come to be known as the “Æther Pearl”, which has multiple unearthly qualities and is capable of bestowing a small set of superhuman or supernatural abilities to those that come into contact with it, with each member of the unit being provided one unique ability only they can wield, another shared among those of the same gender, and two more universally shared among their entire unit.

Nuet, the commander and founder of the Magpies, has a special gift which allows her to read and predict a variety of details about an individual from simple physical contact, from the person’s general demeanor, to things dealing with their current motivations and intentions, and even events from their past. It is like gaining a snapshot of every dirty little secret a person has or intends to have, and gives her a comparison to Saint Nicholas from Earth in that regard (knowing who is ‘naughty or nice’). This allows her a large assortment of options on how to deal with potential clients or whether or not to take a job in the first place, since she can determine if their client is honorable or honest, or if they intend to backstab Nuet or her fellow Magpies at any point. Typically, Nuet uses this ability to choose to work for individuals who have strong morals and good intentions, even if the job itself seems suspect or cruel (As she will accept contracts for assassinations if the target is deemed someone the world would be better off without or the outcome of such a death will benefit the world at large.)
